The RaceGas 100032 Race Fuel Concentrate is a laboratory-proven to raise the octane, chemical energy, and oxygen of pump gas to equal race fuel. Considered the best motorcycle octane booster, it does contain the highest quality methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT). It is a very effective octane additive that doesn’t damage oxygen sensors or catalytic converters so it is ideal for modern cars

RaceGas 100032 has a blending chart on the back of the can, which makes it really easy to reach the octane levels you desire, 87 to 92 = 2.5 oz per gallon. FYI, the chart only shows 87 to 91 or 93 so that’s just a bit of an eyeball guesstimate. For example, If you have 16 gallons of 93. Adding a whole can (32oz) would bring you to roughly 97 octane levels. Two full cans would bring you to 101. So on 18 gallons of 93 octanes, you would need just over 2 cans to bring you to 100 octanes.

Any octane additive will leave a slight residue on an O2 sensor, so be warned. However, RaceGas utilizes the exact same compounds that are in VP and Sunoco race fuels (hence why it smells the exact same) so it’ll leave the same residue as either of those two fuels would in your vehicle. I use it in all of my performance vehicles without much issue.

Hi-Test is an all-organic concentrated octane additive containing no metal (lead, manages, or phosphorus) compounds, legal for all types of competition, and readily mixes with all gasoline as well as alcohol or nitro mixtures.

The product will suppress detonation and pre-ignition by modifying the burn rate and increasing the auto-ignition temperature of the air/fuel mixture. The use of Hi-Test in your gasoline will eliminate pinging and knocking and the potentially destructive results of them allowing for higher compression ratios and therefore more horsepower. Hi-Test should be used in concentrations of one to four ounces per gallon of gasoline, one ounce per gallon raises the effective octane levels approximately four points, depending on the base gasoline octane. For racing or very high compression engines, or very low-quality fuel, higher concentrations of Hi-Test may be required.

What is the octane booster?

As the name implies, an octane additive is a synthetic additive that increases the octane amount of fuel. This improves the performance of the engine and protects it against the risk of car ignition. Therefore, if you want your engine to last longer, using an octane additive is highly recommended. In general, the increase in octane amount depends on the proportion of the additive mixed with the fuel.

For your information, octane measures the fuel’s resistance to car ignition. When the octane rating is low, the fuel can ignite at any time uncontrollably. This is often the cause of premature valve wear. Not to mention the risk of the engine getting dirty or knocked over.

Why use an octane booster in your car?

The quality of gasoline has steadily deteriorated in recent years. This has a disastrous impact on our vehicles: a drop in engine power, starting problems, and acceleration holes. Vehicles with carburetors are the main victims. Surveys in auto workshops have shown that almost 80% of breakdowns are the result of poor fuel quality.

Let’s not forget that octane is an essential component of fuels. Due to its volatility, octane levels drop dramatically when refueling at gas stations. This explains the significant drop in fuel quality at the pump.

Car manufacturers recommend using a high-octane fuel (such as unleaded 98). This is to avoid premature wear of the various mechanical parts such as the crankshaft or valves. The use of octane boosters, therefore, continues to be a better alternative to this increasingly alarming degradation of fuels.

The advantages of octane boosters

The advantages of using octane boosters are numerous. For vehicles with carburetors, regular cleaning is no longer necessary. In the case of injection engines, the booster octane rating improves vehicle performance and reduces fuel consumption. Thoroughly clean the injectors and lubricate the injection system.

Below I list the various benefits that octane boosters can bring to your vehicle:

  • Restore vehicle power and performance
  • Increase the octane amount of the fuel by at least 5 points
  • Increasing the efficiency of the motor
  • Optimize fuel combustion
  • Avoid dirtying the engine
  • Prevent premature valve and seat wear
  • Increase engine speed and torque
  • Increase engine power up to 5 HP
  • How to use the octane booster

Using octane boosters is very simple. Normally, you have to pour a full bottle into the tank before filling it. For normal use, a bottle can be mixed with 80 liters of fuel. However, if you drive a sports car, you should mix it with 40 liters of fuel. The best octane additive usually contains lead-free additives. This improves combustion with better engine performance.

It can be used in all gasoline engines, whether injection, carburetor, or turbo. In any case, you should always consult the instruction manual for greater efficiency and to avoid unpleasant surprises.

For diesel engines, you will need to use a cetane enhancer.

It should be noted that the purpose of an octane booster is not necessary to have an ultra-powerful car. Above all, it helps to keep the engine in excellent health and prolong its longevity. Plus, you won’t have to spend all your time in a shop for a repair. However, you don’t have to use it every time you feel like it. You should mainly use it when you fill your tank.

How to choose the best octane boosters?

The choice of an octane booster is not random. You should always use the product that best suits your vehicle. Some people think that the simple introduction of high octane gasoline will increase the power of the vehicle. However, each product has its own specificity. Therefore, you should always make sure that the octane booster is perfectly matched to the characteristics of your vehicle.

  • The type of vehicle
  • If you are considering using an octane booster, it is very important to know the type of your vehicle. The required octane number is not the same for a normal car as it is for a sports car. You should also pay special attention to the active ingredient used. Always make sure that the model you choose is suitable for your type of vehicle.

  • The type of fuel
  • This criterion should never be neglected, as the consequences can be disastrous for your vehicle. It is important to understand that not all octane additives on the market necessarily fit all fuels. Whether your vehicle runs on unleaded gasoline, biofuel, LPG, or ethanol, the product to use may be different. Therefore, you should always strictly observe the conditions of use as well as the specifications of each product before making your choice.

    Precautions when buying octane boosters

Many people tend to choose a very high octane rating to increase the horsepower of their vehicles. This is a mistake because the motor has its own limitations. Only the manufacturer can determine the proper octane.

Note that there are four octane levels: 85, 87, 89, and 92. It is never easy to make the right decision without a perfect understanding of the vehicle’s characteristics.

I recommend that you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations as they are in the best position to provide you with relevant advice. Do not forget that using a product with a lower or higher octane rating than recommended will adversely affect your engine.

Don’t always trust sellers’ claims as they may not be subject matter experts. You risk damaging your vehicle unnecessarily. In addition, the result will not live up to your expectations.

Important: Practical guidelines for using octane boosters

  • Octane boosters are useful (a) only in high-performance engines that require high-quality fuel and (b) engines that fight against knocking. For most other use cases, octane additives are of limited value. Another important first step is to check your owner’s manual for the recommended octane level for your vehicle. For most personal uses, the requirement is only to meet the specified octane level.
  • If you’ve determined that you really need an octane booster, the first filter for octane amps would be to narrow down the options based on the octane boost they provide. Be careful at this point because 1 RON of octane boost is sometimes described as ‘points’ of octane to mislead. 1 RON = 10 octane points is the measurement to take into account here. To further clarify, if you need to increase the octane ratings by 3 RON, you need an octane booster that can increase up to 3 rating numbers or their equivalent, 30 points.
  • The next important point to evaluate is whether the octane booster works for your specific engine type, and also whether it can have a detrimental impact on internal engine components such as the catalytic converters and the O2 Sensors. For example, vintage carbureted cars are unlikely to experience a significant impact. On the other hand, a newer car with a turbocharged engine with a precisely calibrated engine control unit will benefit the most. These examples are just to give an idea of the spectrum of engine types.
  • The next factor to consider is the budget. A good way to maximize the usefulness of your octane boosters is to buy them only for long or major trips where the engine is likely to be stressed for a longer period of time. Be sure to read our review of the best octane additives for a guide to choosing the right product.
  • I hope that with this article, you will more easily choose your future octane booster.

    Conclusion:

All of the above products are different therefore you must check your vehicle compatibility before using any of them. It is always important to consider the above guideline before using any of the above products mentioned.
